#stayathome 05: Drinnen nach draußen kommen

Zu Hause bleiben und trotzdem andere Welten bereisen? Klingt einfach, ist es aber nicht. Felix Knoke über das Problem mit dem Kinderspiel.

Ich dachte, in der Coronakrise könnte ich meinem Kind endlich das Spielen zeigen. Ich wollte ihn mitnehmen zu den höchsten Gipfeln des Mun, mit ihm durch die Pixellandschaften von Minecraft wandern, unmögliche Maschinen bauen und noch unmöglichere Abenteuer erleben. Ich hatte mir erhofft, dass ihm Spiele die beengte Welt vergrößern und neue, spannendere Welten hinter unserem Wohnzimmer eröffnen würden. Ich konnte kaum darauf warten, dass seine Freunde miteinsteigen würden, oder sogar wir als Familie, mit dem Gamepad in der Hand…

Aber Pustekuchen. Mein Kind ist noch zu klein für Spiele. Sind die Spiele zu interessant, krieg ich es nicht mehr vom Bildschirm. Sind sie zu langweilig, bleibt es zunehmend unglücklicher am Bildschirm kleben. Und nichts, was wir noch anbieten können, reicht an den verbotenen Reiz eines verschlossenen iPads heran. Meistens endet das Spielen also im Streit. Und Streit ist in der Krise, was die Krise schon selbst genug ist.

Dass man die eigenen Kinder nicht spielen lassen will, hatte ich immer als eine Art Schonhaltung erwachsener VideospielerInnen empfunden. Je besser man Videospiele und ihre Mechanismen kennt, desto größer wird die Furcht vor ihnen: dass sie Sucht erzeugen, falsche Rollenbilder vermitteln, Militarismus und Neoliberalismus glorifizieren, politisch meist rechts, intellektuell meist unten und ästhetisch ganz weit hinten stehen. Dass sie dunkle Designmuster gegen uns verwenden und oft so etwas wie Spaß machen, aber bestimmt keine Freude.

Ich spiele oft und viel Videospiele. Besonders liebe ihre entgrenzten Zustände (ja, gerade auch Gewalt), den Flow und ihr unerforschtes Potenzial. Gerade in so einer Zeit der Begrenzung und Verdichtung ermöglichen sie mir die Flucht ins Innere. Aber ich fürchte auch die dunklen Mechanismen der Spiele, die zwanghaften Spiel-Schleifen, die gezielte Frustration, das ewig uneingelöste Versprechen – also genau die verengten Zustände und Zwänge, denen ich entkommen will. Gerade in so einer Zeit der Ohnmacht, scheinen mir Spiele ein Gefühl von Kontrolle zu geben – und das Erfolgserlebnis, etwas, das nur mich etwas angeht, besonders gut zu können. So zu spielen ist keine Flucht sondern Vereinzelung.

Ich kann mein Kind nicht mit Videospielen alleine lassen. Aber ich kann mit ihm zusammen spielen. Hin und wieder darf es eine Gamepad in die Hand nehmen und ein bisschen Motorrad oder Auto in Burnout Paradise fahren. Ich gebe Gas, mein Kind lenkt. Am Handy hat es sich weitgehend selbst beigebracht, mit Space Agency ( Android / iOS ) eine vorgefertigte Rakete zu starten – nur darf es selten ans Handy. Deswegen baue ich und mein Kind startet. Bevor die Rakete im Orbit ist, ist das Spiel langweilig geworden. Nur der Countdown zählt. Am meisten Spielzeit verbringt mein Kind aber mit mir und Kerbal Space Program. Länger als 20 Minuten hält es das nicht aus – und das ist natürlich der Grund, warum wir genau das spielen.

Ein Videospiel ist für mein Kind vor allem ein Spiel ohne weitere narrative oder ästhetische Dimensionen.

Aber 20 Minuten ist nichts, jetzt, wo Bildschirmzeit nicht nur ein Luxus, sondern eine familienhygienische Notwendigkeit ist. Vorm Fernsehen könnte mein Kind stundenlang sitzen. Die hübschen, süßen, poetischen, cleveren Spiele, die einem allenthalben Empfohlen werden, hält es nicht einmal eine halbe Stunde durch. Die Frage ist natürlich: Wenn schon Bildschirm, wo ist dann mein Kind besser aufgehoben? Mein Argument bisher war: Gut ausgewählt, sind Videospiele garantiert ein besserer Zeitvertreib als der Kinderfernseh-Wahnsinn. Aber seitdem ich mit meinem Kind, seiner Mutter und mir selbst herzlich über diese Haltung darüber gestritten habe, bin ich mir da nicht mehr sicher.

Ich beobachte mein Kind, wie es fernsieht und wie es spielt. Er ist emotional total mit seinen Serien verbunden, kommentiert jede Szene und erzählt uns, was passiert. Die Serienfiguren werden Teil seines Spiels auf dem Wohnzimmerteppich, es lacht und spricht von seinen Fellfreunden – in seiner Fantasie ist es längst selbst einer von den Hunden. Die Videos und deren Geschichten sind Teil seines Alltags, wir können über sie sprechen und die Charaktere in unseren Geschichten weiterleben lassen. Bei Videospielen ist das ganz anders, egal, wie erzählerisch sie tun oder wie viel Mühe sich sich mit lustigen Charakteren machen. Ein Videospiel ist für mein Kind vor allem ein Spiel ohne weitere narrative oder ästhetische Dimensionen. Es gibts nichts nachzuahmen, zu erzählen und selbst das Erforschen und Ausprobieren und Verbiegen oder gar Überwinden dieser Welten spielt keine Rolle.

Das hübsche Rätselspiel Windosill von Vectorpark ist für mein Kind nicht mehr als ein Papierpuzzle. Dessen Pixelwelten sind genau so im Hintergrund, nur funktionell wichtig, wie das zerlegte Bild auf den Puzzlestücken. Der tolle Unsympath Chuchel von Amanita Design lässt mein Kind kalt. All die schönen Charaktere und anderen Spieldinge nimmt mein Kind nur als Spielzeug wahr, als Objekt seiner Spiellust. Dabei sind doch gerade Emotionen und Gemeinschaft, was meinem Kind fehlt. Ihr wie auch immer gearteter poetischer Charme oder ludische Tiefe offenbaren sich nur mir – es sind Spiele für Eltern. Emotional und erzählerisch und intellektuell ist er am Fernsehen besser aufgehoben.

Diese Beobachtung hat mich ganz bange gemacht: Erstens muss das falsch sein, weil Fernsehen kacke ist. Zweitens könnte das ja auch auf mich zutreffen: Spiele ich etwa auch aus den falschen Gründen und verpasse die kommunikativen und kulturellen also anschlussfähigen Schätze des Fernsehens?

Vielleicht spielt mein Kind einfach zu wenig Videospiele, um deren anderen Gehalt als den der schnellen Reiz-Reaktions-Befriedigung zu erkennen? Ich würde gerne mit meinem Kind darüber reden können, was es spielt und wie es das wahrnimmt. Es soll nicht allein sein, es könnte unsere gemeinsame Sache sein – und immerhin, glaube ich, würde ich es verstehen können. Als ich ein Kind war, verstand niemand, warum Videospiele magisch waren. Und es interessierte sich auch niemand dafür. Aber ich befürchte, dass ich zu viel von meinem Kind erwarte. Vielleicht fehlt ihm schlicht die Fantasie dafür.

Vielleicht braucht man erst eine ausgeprägte Fantasiewelt oder wenigstens die zu ihrem Aufbau nötigen Werkzeuge, um in Spielen mehr sehen zu können als eine Befriedigungsmaschine? Welche Wirklichkeit offenbart sich meinem Kind durch einen Bildschirm? Oder genauer: Habe ich überhaupt selbst verstanden, welche Wirklichkeit ich in Spielen erlebe?

Ich habe das Gefühl, dass die meisten Spiele sich ihres Traumhaften nicht bewusst sind und sogar viel zu stark auf ihren angeblichen Zusammenhang pochen oder ihn erzwingen oder durchsetzen wollen. Ich vermute, dass dieses Pochen auf Kohärenz in den meisten Fällen nur den Traumcharakter verstärkt, weil es eine weitere Verengung ist und zwangsläufig ständig auf Widerstände und Widersprüche stößt oder sie erst provoziert. Vor allem erschweren sie damit ihr größeres eskapistisches Potenzial. Man muss die sehr verengten, sehr begrenzten Videospielwelten mit großer Anstrengung aufknacken und umformen, damit sie ein Teil der Fantasie werden können. Sie müssen das explizit Spielhafte verlieren, um zum Traum zu werden.

Vielleicht verschiebe ich das auf nach die Krise, vielleicht in ein paar Jahren.

Auch wenn ich also gerne mehr mit meinem Kind spielen möchte: Ich verschiebe es auf nach die Krise, vielleicht in ein paar Jahren, wenn es genug narrativen und fantastischen Ballast angesammelt hat, um die Videospielwelten anzureichern mit dem, was er aus Büchern, Filmen und Serien gelernt hat. Spiele sind noch kein Rückzugsraum für ihn, kein emotionaler Spielplatz oder Trainingshalle für seine motorischen und intellektuellen Fähigkeiten.

Ich habe aber trotzdem gesehen, wie ich mit ihm Spiele gemeinsam erleben kann: Indem ich mit ihm am Fernsehen VideospielerInnen zuschaue, die gemeinsam mit anderen Spielen, Spaß habe und ihre eigene Spaßwelt erschaffen, an der wir teilhaben können.

Das ist ganz rührend: Die Freude am Spielen ist viel besser als die Spiele selbst.
