Stagnation, Aufgewärmtes, Sequels: Wer sagt, dass es bei Games nicht noch Platz für revolutionär Neues, für Unerwartetes, Abwegiges oder schlicht: das Unmögliche geben darf? The Games That Never Were ist ein Gedankenexperiment: Spiele, wie es sie nie gegeben hat und so auch wohl nicht geben wird. Mein zweiter eigenhändiger Eintrag in diese Reihe Games Speculation ist ein Sonderfall: Was wäre, wenn Visceral Games den dritten Teil der Dead Space-Reihe nicht dem vermeintlichen Massengeschmack des Actionpublikums angepasst hätte, sondern tatsächlich den Survival Horror von Teil 1 auf ein neues Plateau gehoben hätte? Angst statt Action, Dead Space hoch 3 statt Dead Space 3 - ein Game that Never Was.
Wenn Spieleentwickler selbst öffentlich Designentscheidungen bedauern, läuft etwas schief. So seufzt der Autor des ersten Teils der Dead Space-Reihe, Antony Johnston, im Interview, dass der Action-Fokus des dritten Teils auch nicht nach seinem Geschmack sei:
... the greater emphasis on big action in the sequels means they’re not really for me. ... [The focus on action is] a necessary evil in order to broaden the fan base.
... otherwise you’d just have the same game on a different ship each time, and that’s pretty dull.
